1- Beach fun:
There is no doubt that the beach is always one of the preferred activities for children, tweens and teens, and in Costa Rica there is no shortage of beautiful beaches, the closest ones just one hour away from San José, in this area, Playa Blanca in Punta Lena is great for children since the waves are small and in general the beach is very safe, but if your kids want to learn how to surf, Jaco and Herradura are also good alternatives. Guanacaste and Limon both have many beautiful beaches. Conchal, in Guanacaste and Cahuita, in Limón are both good options when you are vacationing with children.
2- National Parks:
It is fun for adults and also a great activity for children, they can be entertained exploring the forest while they also learn about animals and plants. The Manuel Antonio National Park in Quepos is a family favorite, the monkeys found here are always a big hit with children, and the beach is just a few steps away. There are many National Parks to choose from, it all depends on what is convenient for you in terms of location. Manzanillo in the Caribbean is always fun; the Irazu Volcano in Cartago or the Rincon de la Vieja in Guanacaste are also excellent choices.
3- Safari Adventure:
All kids love the idea of a safari, and the good news is, you don’t have to go all the way to Africa, right here in Costa Rica you can enjoy a small-scale safari at the Ponderosa Adventure Park, where your kids will get to see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, etc. roaming free and even have the opportunity to feed them.; but this is not all, the park offers a complete adventure with different tours that include visiting waterfalls, kayaking, hiking and ATV tours.
4- Dinosaur Fun:
If your kids are into dinosaurs, believe it or not, you can also find those here; head over to Guanacaste, specifically to the Blue River Resort & Hot Springs where your kids will see life-size animatronic creatures in the middle of the Costa Rican forest. The place also features refreshing pools, healing hot springs and is close to the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, which is great if you want days packed with activities.
The hot summer days in Costa Rica are better if spent close to the water, waterparks represent hours of fun. The Kalambu Hot Springs Water Park in La Fortuna, San Carlos is small but offers fun water slides, play areas, thermal pools, among other entertainment. Villa Fantasia in Orotina is just 45 minutes from San Jose and has 3 pools, 2 big water slides, and 5 smaller ones, soccer field and playground.
Explorers? The Venado Caves located in San Carlos, about 45 minutes away from La Fortuna, is a fun place for older kids looking for a different adventure. P.S. If your kids are afraid of bats this is not for them.
7- Movie Time:
Going to the movies never gets old, in Costa Rica you’ll find a big selection of movie theaters and even two locations with Junior Theaters that have fun playgrounds, colorful decoration and safe areas for the little ones to enjoy.
8- Adventure Parks:
There are several adventure parks in Costa Rica that offer different types of entertainment for children different ages. Charrarra Park in Cartago is beautiful, its main attraction is the Cachi Lake where the entire family can choose to do some kayaking or jet skiing. Turubari Park is also very popular, located in Turrubares, Alajuela, the place is famous for its aerial tramway, but horseback riding and canopy are also a lot of fun for kids.
9- Amusement Park:
The Parque de Diversiones in la Uruca has great rides for kids of different ages, activities are organized in the weekends to add to the fun.
10- Rescue Centers:
Take advantage of your time in Costa Rica to teach your children about the importance of caring for the environment and the different animal species that can be found in the country. The Zoo Ave in La Garita, Alajuela is a beautiful place to visit; if you are in the Caribbean you can stop by the Sloth Sanctuary and/or the Jaguar Rescue Center. The Toucan Rescue Ranch in Heredia is also a fun and educational experience.
11- Jumping action:
For how long can kids jump? Put them to the test in the different trampoline parks in the country. Jump Center has two locations, one in Santa Ana and another one in Tibas; Skyjump is in Santa Ana.
There are a few places to practice paintball, a fun activity specially designed for children 10 and up. Paintball Arena in Heredia and Adventure Paintball are two of the most visited.
13- Indoor Kart Racing:
Formula Kart in Curridabat and FIK Karts in Lindora are entertainment centers where children, teens and adults can practice indoor karting, there’re also pool tables, table hockey and foosball.
14- Animals and Waterfalls:
Incredible gardens and views, rescued wild animals such as monkeys, jaguars and toucans, the possibility of feeding hummingbirds and of being surprised by friendly butterflies. La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a magical place for children, this is actually an obligatory stop, your kids will love it.
Rolling downhill inside a big plastic ball sounds about as much fun as any kid would like to have. This activity is for children 12 and up; take them zorbing at Arenal Mistico Park, where other fun activities await.
16- White water rafting:
This is one of the activities that tourists inquire about the most, and contrary to what you may think, this is something that can be enjoyed by the entire family, it is only a matter of choosing the right river depending on your experience and the age of your children. Class 1 and Class 2 are mild rides perfect for beginners.
Bol Cariari is the best one for the youngest members of the family, it’s colorful, fun and they have other options of entertainment.
18- Mini Golf:
In San Jose, the only place to practice mini golf is at the Jungle Safari Golf in Lindora, it’s in the same shopping center as the Jump Center which is great for a full day of fun.
19- Spot Whales and Dolphins:
Being able to see whales and dolphins in their natural environment is not something you get to see every day. Take the children on a whale watching tour in Bahia Ballena or Quepos and give them an unforgettable experience.
20- Waterfall fun:
Adventure seekers will really enjoy a tour to the Nauyaca Waterfalls located in the area of Perez Zeledon; horseback riding, hiking, nature and refreshing waterfalls.
